'ASYLUM'

 PROJECT 02 / BREAKDOWN

This was a project I did for my first Substance Designer class at Gnomon. I have always liked horror but have never made a piece in that genre so I took this as a learning opportunity.

I really wanted to learn Designer, so for this project I tried seeing how far I could take the program and experiment with a couple workflows that will be showcased below.

I was heavily inspired by photographs of old abandoned asylums for this piece, but wanted to explore and environment around an abandoned prison asylum.

I was heavily inspired by the games Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Calisto Protocol.

PROJECT 02 / ZOO

For this project I wanted to focus on learning Designer, so invested most of my time understanding how to use the program and how to make environment kit pieces.

I used Quixel to gather some props and decals that I used for the project those of which can be seen on the right image.

PROJECT 02 / MATERIALS

These are some of my most successful materials in this project. All of them where done using Substance Designer and rendered in Marmoset Toolbag.

This was my first time using Unreal's material layer system and I really enjoyed the workflow because it gave me so many more options to blend different materials in different ways.

I made some variations with damages or other details and blended them using world noises and vertex painting. A really cool feature I learned during class was the ability to add mask information onto the vertex painting edges which really elevated the quality of the blends. I really enjoyed the versatility of this workflow and how much control I was able to get over my materials.

PROJECT 02 / TEXTURING

HighresScreenshot00021_edited_edited.jpg

Like I mentioned earlier I really wanted to dive deep into Designer and on top of making materials I also tried making trim sheets, which I used to model and bake information onto my low geo models. I was very impressed by the results and the flexibility that this workflow gave me.

I still wanted to continue polishing my props making skills so I made this wheelchair in Maya and Zbrush which I then baked and textured using Painter.
